Stratford Olympic Park, Poker, Gaming Pub & Chill

Stratford Olympic Park

A few weeks ago I went with some mates to check out the poker tournaments in Aspers Casino in Stratford. The casino itself is in the newly built Westfields Shopping Centre. This area is where the London Olympics was held, and you can leave the shopping mall and check it out.

Within a 5 minute walk, you can check out the Olympic Stadium with its ghastly ArcelorMittal Orbit. There is a very long slide inside it so that's a plus which I think costs £15.

Just to note, the guy who designed this did the really super cool Chicago bean "Cloud Gate". Why couldn't he do something as good for London?

Close to the Olympic Stadium there's the Aquatics Centre, which is amazing inside and out. One of the big commitments from our pitch was that these facilities would be available to all, at a reasonable price.

A little bit further on, the Velodrome (Cycling Stadium) sits, with and outdoor track behind it for the mountain biking etc.

Aspers Casino, Westfields

We went on a Wednesday afternoon "Afternoon Annihilator" 1 re-entry tournament which was £30 buy in, 15 blinds level. What isn't said on the website is that it also had a bounty £5 too which is actually huge.

Going on a Wednesday afternoon usually I don't expect much in Milton Keynes, I mean there is literally no point. I went one time and it barely had 2 tables worth of entries. But in London we got around 45 runners, with 20 rebuys which wasn't bad. Kinda brought back nostalgic moments of the infamous Gutshot in Farringdon, of course never as homely and much more corperate Casino style.

My losing hand ended up being with AA. UTG opened, a short stack went all in which was to the right of the dealer which I didn't see. I looked down at my pocket rockets and was thinking about my 3 bet size then was informed that a short stack had gone all in. Then going to the tank I considered flatting to induce action from the UTG guy, but then realised I had taken so long it would be really weird of me to flat this all in. So I rejammed, UTG called anyways, and I got it in vs his TT and shortie's 33. UTG shouted "one more time", and with some Hachem luck the T came on the flop and that was that.

All the characters of a live tournament were there. A classic, if that's your thing;
  • The Crazy Loose Nutcase - This guy plays any two cards, chases any draw and never folds flop or turn. River will be super thin calls which are usually good because for some reason people would try and bluff him. Usually knocks out Old School Grumpy man by sucking out on him.Crazy loose nutcase usually loses when blinds get higher and he gets value owned.
  • The Old School Grumpy Man - First thing this guy does is to announce to the table that it is a bad idea to raise his blinds. However, if you do raise his blinds he will moan and take ages to fold. Then after he folds he will say that next time, if you raise his blinds he will shove any two cards blind (but actually wont). Promptly lost to Crazy Loose Nutcase when his KK lost to T3 on a 789AJ board. "Idiot" he says walking off grumpily...
  • The Complete Noob - Quiet, reserved, sometimes shaking. Always makes mistakes posting blinds or playing out of turn. Every player knows the newbie and is happy to take advantage of those free chips. Poor guy!
  • The Tryhard - Complete with sunglasses, headphones, and some kind of poker trophy chip protector, this guy loves coming to this $30 tournament with swagger. The knowledge he exudes from irrelevant hands where he is always right makes him feel like he is the don, when in fact the whole table knows he is a douchebag. Nothing hurts more then losing to this guy, and indeed, he was the one with TT.

Secret Weapon - Loading Bar

10 minutes away from Westfields Shopping Mall, a friend told us about a gaming pub that he found close to the area. We went to check it out. It seems that there are a lot of these popping up lately, my theory is that dudes that were born in the 80's have some money now to live out their own and therefore also their customer's nostagical video game eras by making these places.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, these are bars or pubs that have video games inside them, retro or recent instead of it being sports themed. I would say that this was a cross between Meltdown Bar in Caledonian Road, and Four Quarters Bar in Peckham.

There is a retro arcade machine that is linked to a big projector screen. We had fun playing the old school Street Fighter but it was some weird version with characters we hadn't seen before. I think this costed like 50p a go or something.

Round the side there is a more "private" area and a big tv screen for some 2 player gaming, with some pretty awesome gaming chairs.

Around the corner there are stools and more PS4's set up with screens on the wall. Opposite that an area with tons of board games and D & D style games. Outside there is also a smoking area with a big sofa thing with heating there.

Out of all the ones I've been to, I would say this is my favourite. It seems more cleaner and organised in its setup, and there's more variety in what it offers.

Anyways I guess since I missed a post last week this can count as a double post. Super short comment about UK leaving the EU, it seems sad to me that campaigns have no consequences to straight up lying about facts to win (£350 million a week will be paid from EU back to NHS). Its sad that we left, its sad that not just us but other countries are looking more towards an Us vs Them nationalism mentality when times are hard.

GL at the tables everyone, may the cards fall in your favour!

Avatar Gone!

A few days ago Pokerstars did an update. Well actually I tried to login and it said that my client was so old it didn't support it anymore. Apparently I had managed to open it without loading up the updater...

Anyways after updating I noticed that my avatar was gone. Seemed strange...

So I thought, oh that's weird, I'll resubmit it. I found the picture and did that.

After waiting a day it had said that it was submitted, but my avatar was still blank. Very strange... so I emailed Stars.

I had also noticed that some other people had the same problem reported on 2p2.

This isn't the first time that Stars has had software problems, and it seems to have gotten worse since the takeover from Amaya. They might have lost some of the original team.

Anyways going pictureless isn't the worst thing ever. Its just #FirstWorldPokerPlayerProblems lol
I hope you guys are all doing ok at the tables and not getting too many bugs...

Right now I'm watching the Ubisoft presentation at E3 where they have 6 Virtual Reality players playing some weird flying football game. I'm sure its more fun then it seems, but one thing is for sure... No one looks cool playing it

I Finally Binked a 100x Spin!

No Deja Vu Please!

Its Monday, so that means its blogtime! I wasn't really sure what I was gonna blog about to be honest, then in my session this little dude popped up;

Whoever chooses these colour schemes, stuck in the 70s or something?

I've played about 20k of these games and a top 3 occurs on average every 10k games, so I was very surprised that it turned up.

Anyways, it seemed to be pretty good timing as today for some reason I really felt like I was in the zone. I pretty much wanted to maintain my concentration to crush today.

However, its only natural when bad thoughts come into my mind. The two previous 200x's I had lost AA to Q9 heads up, and A9 to A6 heads up for the win respectively and I was really hoping that this wasn't gonna happen again.

Pleaseeeee anything but a bad beat!

The previous times I was quite nervous early on, I could feel my heart pumping at bb20 (the first blind level) which was a bit strange because there would be a little bit to go. But this time, I was pretty calm until I got the chip lead 3 handed and went heads up as favourite.

Heads up lasted as massive one hand, and it held! Seventeen hands, seventeen minutes of a game for $1500 and I won! I hoped that all my studying and experiences had paid off and it did. I felt calm and focused to prepare for the slugfest but it ended up being as a standard game as can be...

Thank goodness, what a weight is lifted off my shoulders!

(The most uninteresting hand ever for the win, but that's how us Regs want it!)

Bitter Sweet Victory

As is of these top multipliers it has to come early on, meaning I had to continue playing towards reaching my self set volume goals for the month. It is especially hard to concentrate after playing (win or lose) a big one and I'm sure the less disciplined me would have just "taken the win" right there.

Only Spins and MTTs make graphs this stupid looking :D
Dispite winning the big one, my session ran pretty bad ending with -10k chips in ev, hadn't had a bad one like this since April. But such are Spins, that's just the way it is sometimes, I'm quite proud of the fact that I carried on playing and kept the concentration up. Either way, a $500 hourly isn't too bad... not sure if i'll be able to keep it up though!

Anyways, hope all ya fellow regs and recreationals are enjoying the summer and doing well at the tables. Keep at it and talk to u next week!
